1 dead in West Hills shopping center parking lot shooting, police say

At least one person died and three others were injured in a Saturday afternoon shooting at a busy shopping center parking lot in West Hills, police said.

A man believed to be about 45 years old died at the scene, according to LAFD spokesperson Margaret Stewart. Two women in their thirties were injured; one was in critical condition, the other in serious to critical condition. A man about 45 years old also was in serious to critical condition.

LAFD arrived at the Fallbrook Center, at Fallbrook Avenue and Vanowen Street, around 3:40 p.m., and all the injured victims were transported to the hospital, according to Stewart. It was not immediately clear if there were more victims.

NBC4 reported a man in a red sedan was taken into custody, along with a woman.

The suspect may be known to the victims, said Los Angeles Police Department Officer Jayder Chaves. It was unclear if the shooting was gang-related.

Adam Strickland was about to enjoy some ice cream in his car when he heard “pops” in the parking lot. At first, he didn’t know what the noise was.

“It didn’t even occur to me (the pops) were gunshots until I saw people in my mirrors running down the parking lot,” Strickland said in an interview with freelance videographer RMG news.

Strickland said he saw one of the male victims right after he was hit by fire.

“The guy who got shot kind of just slowly fell to the ground,” he said, “and the people who were with him started panicking.”

The last thing Strickland saw was another man applying pressure to the injured man’s wounds, he said. Then police arrived.
