5 things I can’t wait to eat in Disneyland’s new Toontown — and 4 I’ll definitely skip

I’m approaching the new restaurant items in Mickey’s Toontown with both anticipation and trepidation since eating off the kids’ menu can be a tricky proposition with the pitfalls often outweighing the occasional rewards.

I can’t help being excited — and a little terrified — about some of the new food and beverage items on the menu at Cafe Daisy and Good Boy Grocers when Mickey’s Toontown returns on March 19 after a yearlong reimagination.

The newly refreshed family-friendly themed land will certainly be geared toward the grade-school crowd and their parents, but there’s no question Toontown will be brimming with plenty of PG-13 and older visitors looking for something good to eat with the popular new Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway serving as the land’s centerpiece.

Judging menu items by glamor photos and simple descriptions is dicey business, but we do eat with our eyes before we ultimately stuff the food in our mouths.

What’s to eat and drink in the reimagined Toontown? Let’s take a closer look at five things I can’t wait to try and four more I will be gladly skipping.

Can’t Wait

Minnie’s Mini Corn Dogs (Disney)

1) Minnie’s Mini Corn Dogs

$7.99 at Cafe Daisy

The Disneyland corn dog at the Little Red Wagon is legendary. My hope is these mini corn dogs are somehow just as good.

I’m worried they could be coming out of a bag based on their uniform appearance — rather than hand-dipped like the on-a-stick versions sold on Main Street, U.S.A.

How great would it be to have a McNugget version of the Disneyland classic? I’m willing to give the mini corn dogs a chance for that reason alone.

Pepperoni Pizza Flop-Over (Disney)

2) Pepperoni Pizza Flop-Over

Pepperoni, Mozzarella, Provolone Cheese with Tomato Sauce — $10.49 at Cafe Daisy

I fully realize this is just a personal pizza folded in half – but I love the presentation.

The novelty of the parmesan and oregano sprinkled on the bottom of the crust is what makes me want to eat this flop-over – which is also just fun to say. “I’ll have a flop-over, please.”

Daisy’s Dressed-up Dog (Disney)

3) Daisy’s Dressed-Up Dog

All-beef Foot-long with Chili-Cheese Sauce, Mac n Cheese and Parmesan Potato Crispies, with House-made Chips – $14.49 at Cafe Daisy

This foot-long reminds me of a Dodger Dog — which is no different than any other hot dog, but somehow seems more fun.

The parmesan crispies sprinkled on top of the dog are the biggest selling point for me. A small swath of mac n cheese is about all I want. And I’m always a sucker for homemade potato chips.

I must say $15 for a hot dog is a pretty steep price point — even by Disneyland standards. It better be worth it or I won’t be back.

Toontown ‘Tater Chips (Disney)

4) Toontown ‘Tater Chips

House-made Potato Chips with Chili-Cheese Sauce – $7.49 at Cafe Daisy

I could eat freshly cooked potato chips all day — even if my waistline wouldn’t appreciate it.

Stir in a little bit of chili with what looks like movie theater nacho cheese and you’ve got me at hello.

Picnic Time Watermelon Lemonade (Disney)

5) Picnic Time Watermelon Lemonade

Minute Maid Lemonade Light with Watermelon Premium Syrup and Watermelon Gummies — $6.49 at Cafe Daisy

Lemonade is my go-to drink and I’m always looking for a way to plus-up the standard issue summer refresher.

A jolt of watermelon is enough to get me to try this out at least once. The cute watermelon gummies floating on top push me over the edge.

Pepperoni Please Pizza (Disney)

1) Pepperoni Please Pizza

Pepperoni, Cheese and Tomato Sauce — $7.49

Throwing three pieces of pepperoni in a Mickey silhouette on a tiny pizza just won’t do it for me.

I realize there is likely zero difference between the taste of this kids-size pizza and the flop-over I’m in love with — but I have no interest in this Pepperoni Mickey no matter how much Disney dresses it up.

I imagine this micro-pizza sitting under a heat-lamp forever and have little interest in this warmed over staple.

Mac & Cheesy (Disney)

2) Mac & Cheesy

$7.49 or toddler-size for $4.99 at Cafe Daisy

This looks like Kraft Mac & Cheese straight out of the box. Disneyland is certainly not going to serve this in a glass bowl on a wavy dinner plate.

I realize there has to be something simple on the menu for the kids with finicky palettes, but I don’t have to order it.

Mac n cheese is one of my basic food groups, but I expect it to shine and knock my socks off. I can’t imagine Toontown’s Mac & Cheesy will meet the challenge.

Daisy’s Goody-Goody Donuts (Disney)

3) Daisy’s Goody-Goody Donuts

Housemade Mini-Donuts with Cinnamon Sugar — $5.99 at Cafe Daisy

This one looks like another veto vote served up for the kid who won’t eat anything.

Disney does dessert better than anyone. There are plenty of other places in the park where I can get my fix. This one’s a hard pass for me.

Bursty Bubbly Berry (Disney)

4) Bursty Bubbly Berry

Fanta Blue Raspberry with Blueberry Popping Spheres — $7.49 at Good Boy Grocers

A raspberry and blueberry drink makes me grit my teeth at the prospect of a sweetness overload.

Disney has a tendency to overdo the saccharine with these extremely sugary drinks.

I could be wrong — but I’m not going to find out.
