VOTE: Southern California Girls Athlete of the Week, October 7

Each week, publications from the Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select the Athletes of the Week for their respective region.

Each athlete is then entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Click on the newspaper links below the athlete’s name to read about their performance from last week, and then vote for who you think deserves the top honor.

Readers are allowed to vote multiple times. Voting ends at midnight, but final totals aren’t always immediately reflected due to processing.

Daniela Borruel, Sunny Hills: The reigning CIF-SS individual champion defeated Troy standout Nadia Kojonroj 6-1 and added  6-1, 6-0 victories in singles in a 9-9 loss via a tiebreaker in a Freeway League match. Borruel, the Register’s Orange County player of the year in 2021, improved to 21-0 in singles.

Samarah DaCoud, Lakewood: DaCoud led Lakewood to a 3-1 win against Long Beach Poly on Sept. 27. The senior outside hitter had 18 kills and 15 digs to power the Lancers to victory. Lakewood is undefeated in the Moore League and can clinch another league title at home against Wilson on Tuesday, Oct. 11. DaCoud is committed to the University of New Mexico.

Kayla Giddings, San Marino: The sophomore won the White Division varsity race at the Bellarmine-Sacred Heart cross country invitational. Her time of 19 minutes, 46.7 seconds was the top mark of the day. Giddings is a rising star and multiple-sport athlete at San Marino. In softball last spring, she set the San Marino record for stolen bases in a season with 24. She also plays soccer, and she lettered in three varsity sports as a freshman.

Julia Tolstova, Redlands: Tolstova registered a career-high 32 kills and tallied 19 digs as the Terriers outlasted Cajon in five sets to remain unbeaten in Citrus Belt League play. The 5-foot-11 outside hitter eclipsed her previous best of 28 kills, set against Redlands East Valley last month. Tolstova had 95 attacks in the match, which also was a career high. She had 15 kills earlier in the week as the Terriers swept Citrus Valley. Tolstova has 375 kills this season and is averaging 5.5 kills per set.

Jamie Roth, San Pedro: The Pirates exacted a bit of revenge last week on Marine League rival Carson, winning 25-15, 25-10, 25-13. The win was the largest margin over Carson since 2005. Roth helped lead the way with 12 kills, two aces and seven digs. In the teams’ first meeting, Carson defeated San Pedro in five sets. San Pedro began this week in first place in the Marine League.

Kiley Reisner, Simi Valley: Reisner has been an instrumental part of Simi Valley’s hot start this fall. In a match last week against Royal, she fired a 2-under 33 (front nine) at Simi Hills in the team’s 193-269 league victory. Reisner’s sister, Kira, shot 1-under 34 on Monday, Oct. 3 in a win over Moorpark. The Pioneers are 8-2 this season.
