Angels acquire 3B Gio Urshela from the Twins

The Angels have acquired third baseman Gio Urshela from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for minor-league pitcher Alejandro Hidalgo.

Urshela, 31, hit .285 with 13 homers and a .767 OPS last season for the Twins, playing 136 games at third base.

The Angels have Anthony Rendon at third, so it’s unclear how they plan to use Urshela, who will be a free agent after the 2023 season. General manager Perry Minasian will address the deal later on Friday.

Urshela has played 43 games at shortstop, five at second base, three at first and one in the outfield.

Urshela is set to make about $9 million in his final year of arbitration. The Twins faced a Friday deadline to offer him arbitration or let him go.

Hidalgo, a 19-year-old right-hander, has pitched in 17 games over two seasons in the Angels’ system, posting a 4.64 ERA.

The Angels designated left-hander Jhonathan Diaz for assignment to create a spot for Urshela on the 40-man roster.

More to come on this story.
