Shohei Ohtani went 0 for 2 on Friday.
The Angels’ two-way star was a finalist for the Players’ Choice MLB Player of the Year and American League Outstanding Player, but in both cases MLB players picked Judge.
Ohtani won both of those awards last year, along with the American League MVP award, which is selected by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA).
This year, Ohtani and Judge are the two top candidates for the MVP. The top three finishers will be revealed, alphabetically, on Monday. The winner will be announced on Nov. 17.
Judge set the AL record by hitting 62 homers, to go with a .311 batting average and an OPS of 1.111.
Ohtani completed his second straight historic season as baseball’s most successful two-way player since Babe Ruth. Ohtani hit .273 with 34 homers and an .875 OPS, while posting a 15-9 record and 2.33 ERA in 166 innings on the mound. He is the first player in modern major league history to qualify for the leaderboards as both a hitter and a pitcher.
Players also voted for Houston Astros right-hander Justin Verlander over Angels outfielder Mike Trout for the AL Comeback Player of the Year. Verlander also won the AL’s Outstanding Pitcher Award.

Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman (NL Most Outstanding Player) and left-hander Julio Urias (NL Most Outstanding Pitcher) were also finalists but did not win their respective awards. St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt was voted the NL Outstanding Player, and Miami Marlins pitcher Sandy Alcantara was voted the NL Outstanding Pitcher.
Seattle Mariners outfielder Julio Rodriguez (AL) and Atlanta Braves pitcher Spencer Strider (NL) were the Outstanding Rookie award winners, and Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. was the NL Comeback Player of the Year.
New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor was honored more for his work off the field with the MLBPA’s Marvin Miller award.
Finalists for all of the BBWAA awards – MVP, Cy Young, Rookie of the Year and Manager of the Year – will be announced on Monday (3 p.m. PT, MLB Network).
