The CIF Southern Section track and field championships were held at Moorpark High Saturday, where a number of local boys and girls athletes turned in outstanding performances.
However, swirling winds created wind-aided times that aren’t record legal by high school standards. For example, the headline of the weekend was Serra Gardena’s Rodrick Pleasant, who ran an all-time California record in the Division 4 100-meter final by crossing the finish line in 10.09 seconds. But the time was wind-aided by 3.3 meters per second. For record purposes, the wind has to be below 2.0.
Pleasant set the state record last season with a wind-legal 10.14.
Locally, the best performances came from two ladies in Division 3. Notre Dame senior April Fontenette won the girls shot put and discus. The UCLA commit marked a personal best in the shot put with a toss of 45-feet, 2-inches and a personal best in the discus with an effort that went 162-feet, 8-inches. Fontenette’s discus throw was a Division 3 record. Both marks are state leaders.
Castaic junior Meagan Humphries made herself a three-time champion by winning the girls 200 with a wind-legal 23.85, the high jump at 5-feet, 8-inches, and the triple jump with a leap of 39-feet, 10.75-inches.
Quartz Hill’s Adonijah Currie was the only local Division 1 medalist over the weekend. The standout senior won the girls 200 in 23.58, which marked a personal best.
In Division 2, Simi Valley senior Jaelon Barbarin finishes second in the boys 100 with a time of 10.45, but it was wind-aided (2.9). Barbarin was also second in the 200 with a wind-legal 21.41. He was also part of Simi Valley’s 4×100 relay team that won in 41.51 with teammates Thenuk Chandrasekera, Sean Brown and Logan Pollard.
Westlake junior Ifeoluwaleyi Orekoya won the boys 400 with a wind-legal 48.97 and was part of Westlake’s winning 4×400 relay team that finished in 3:20.40 with teammates Brandon Orlow, KC Barber and Marcus Nortey. Calabasas senior Luke Sawyer won the boys 800 in 1-minute, 56.13-seconds. Thousand Oaks senior Pyrce Edwards won boys 300-meter hurdles in 38.05.
In Division 3, Golden Valley’s Marley Scoggins won the girls 100 with a wind-aided 11.89 and finished third in the 200 with a wind-legal 24.31. Scoggins’ teammate Kiera Donovan won the girls discus with a throw of 130-feet, 3-inches.
Notre Dame sophomore Sofia Martinez won the girls 100-meter hurdles in 14.85. Harvard-Westlake senior Jessica Thompson won the girls pole vault at 13-feet, 1-inch.
In Division 4, Sierra Canyon’s Eugene Brooks won the boys shot put (55’06”). Alemany’s Collin Joyce won the long jump (21’11.5″) and triple jump (46′.5″).
LIONS DOMINATE DIVISION 4
The Oaks Christian boys and girls track and field teams each won the CIF-SS Division 4 championship Saturday. The boys scored 133 points and the girls scored 89 points, beating second-place Sierra Canyon (55 points).
Oaks Christian freshman Deshonne Redeaux finished in second place in the boys 100 with a wind-aided 10.42 (behind Pleasant) and second in the 200 (also behind Pleasant) with a wind-legal 21.32. Redeaux was also part of the 4×100 relay team with Chase Farrell, Isaiah Green, and Davon Benjamin, which won the event in 41.28.
Oaks Christian sophomore Chase Hansen won the 400 in 47.89 and was also part of the team’s 4×400 relay team with Aram Sarkissian, Isaiah Green, and Prince Williams, which won the event in 3-minutes, 22.79-seconds.
On the girls’ side, Oaks Christian junior Nia Clayton won the 100 with a wind-legal 11.56. Freshman Rayah Rodriguez won the 400 (54.41) and was part of the Lions’ 4×400 relay team that won the event in 3:52.28 with Keri Dickerson, Eleanor Borchard and Sophia Colebrooke. Junior Payton Godsey won the 1600 and 3200 in 4:55.56 and 10:29.28, respectively. Borchard won the 300-meter hurdles in 43.76.
This year’s CIF-SS Masters meet will be held at Moorpark High on Saturday, May 20.
