At least 5 hurt, suspect at large in San Pedro shooting

SAN PEDRO — At least five people were wounded and a suspect was at large after a Saturday evening shooting in San Pedro, police said.

Shortly before 6 p.m., someone approached a group of men barbecuing at Royal Palms Beach and began a physical altercation, said Los Angeles Police Department officer Warren Moore. During the altercation, shots were fired and struck at least five people, two of whom were in critical condition at a hospital.

The suspect fled the scene in a gray sedan, Moore said.

It was not immediately clear what prompted the initial altercation, he added.

A joint statement from City Council Member Tim McOsker and county Supervisor Janice Hahn said they were “outraged and saddened by the shooting.”

“It’s tragically ironic that today we hosted a gun buy-back event just a few miles away from this location,” the statement continued, adding that the beach will be closed Sunday. “Gun violence is wreaking havoc on our community.”

The beach area is part of the Los Angeles County-operated White Point/Royal Palms Beach.
