Basketball roundup: Ashton Hardaway, Jimmy Oladokun lead Sierra Canyon to victory in debut

The Sierra Canyon boys basketball team was without Bronny James, Isaiah Elohim, Noah Williams and Osiris Nalls Jr. in its season opener Wednesday night. But the Trailblazers had two new faces emerge to pick up the slack in an 85-53 win over King Drew of the City Section.

Ashton Hardaway, who signed to play for his father (Penny Hardaway) at Memphis earlier Tuesday, scored 18 points and La Verne Damien High transfer Jimmy Oladokun scored 24 points in their debuts.

Sophomore Bryce James – Bronny’s little brother – made his varsity debut in front of father, LeBron James, and scored six points.

Bronny was out with illness. Elohim is still working his way back from a knee injury. Williams (a Village Christian transfer) and Nalls (a Viewpoint transfer) are serving the sit-out-period, per CIF transfer rules. They’ll be available on Dec. 26.

Sierra Canyon will play next on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Cleveland High where coach Andre Chevalier played and coached before.

OTHERS SCORES FROM AROUND THE AREA

Newbury Park 66, Viewpoint 43: Cooper Lucas led the Panthers with 22 points and Charlie Muir added 16. Lucas joined the program’s 1,000-point club Wednesday night. Kyle Sardo led Viewpoint with 21.

Oak Park 56, Loyola 42: Oak Park moved to 2-0 thanks to play of Dylan Hayse, a senior that’s proving to be an x-factor for the Eagles. He had 16 points and seven rounds in the win.

Simi Valley 74, Crescenta Valley 64: Ryder Mjoen is proving to a breakout player for the Pioneers. He had 22 points in the win. Mike Grigoryan had 23 points for CV.

Heritage Christian 89, Moorpark 54: Seven Bahati led HCS with 23 points and sophomore Tae Simmons added 19 after scoring 27 points in a win over Granada Hills Tuesday, including a SportsCenter Top 10 dunk.

Saugus 72, Agoura 68 (OT): Max Tengen scored 30 points for the Centurions. Agoura’s Nasir Meyer will be a player to watch this season. Only a junior. He had 23 points.

Oaks Christian 66, Santa Paula 23: Stevie Prudholme led Oaks with 19 points.

Northridge Academy 53, Reseda 34: Marquis Jiles tallied 25 points in the win.

Alemany 79, Valor Academy 15: Jared Mims led the Warriors with 20 points and eight steals.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Ventura 45, Oaks Christian 39: A day after picking up her debut win as the new head coach, Keani Albanez suffers her first defeat. Lola Donez had 15 points and eight rebounds in the setback.

Birmingham 65, Camarillo 55: DeDee Berry, a returning All-City player for the Patriots, had 16 points.

Granada Hills 40, Saugus 35: Marianne Boco led the Highlanders with 16 points and seven steals.

Windward 57, Harvard-Westlake 48: Deana Thompson led Harvard-Westlake with 13 points.
