In a historic transition, Bishop T.D. Jakes announced Sunday that Pastors Touré Roberts and Sarah Jakes Roberts will succeed him as senior pastors of The Potter’s House in Dallas, with the change taking effect later in 2025. While stepping back from daily leadership, Jakes will remain deeply involved as Chairman of the Board and spiritual overseer of the megachurch he founded nearly three decades ago.
After almost fifty years of serving as a pastor and spiritual leader, Jakes sensed a new calling.
“I recognize the urgent need to address more challenges of our time, particularly the looming threat of a disappearing middle class, social unrest and closing opportunity gaps”, the 67-year-old pastor said. “This pivotal moment calls me to focus on a legacy of economic empowerment, serving as a bridge between community, culture, and corporate alliances to help position our nation for a stronger future.”
Jakes, who survived a life-threatening heart attack in late 2024, emphasized that the transition is a step forward, not away. “This elevation is not a departure but a rebirth. I will never stop preaching and will continue to minister,” he affirmed. “This moment isn’t an ending, it’s an expansion. We are not only passing a mantle we are multiplying impact. Leadership is not static, it is dynamic. It demands the courage to evolve.” Pastors Touré and Sarah Jakes Roberts, who currently pastor The Potter’s House at One LA and Denver, affirmed their commitment to continuing the remarkable legacy. “We are committed to building a ministry that carries the heart of Bishop Jakes into a future that is both faithful and forward-thinking,” said Pastor Toure´.
“This is not just a call to serve. It’s a mandate to lead with compassion, clarity, and courage,” added Pastor Sarah.
The announcement follows Bishop Jakes’ health scare last November, when he suffered a massive heart attack while preaching. Doctors later told him he was just minutes from death. Now recovered, Jakes is also preparing to launch a new podcast, My Next Chapter, with iHeartMedia—an exploration of his spiritual journey and evolving mission.
