The stakes could not be higher.

In 2026, Democrats need to gain just three seats to flip control of the U.S. House of Representatives. That slim margin has sent shockwaves through Washington — and through the corridors of power in Texas — where Donald Trump and Governor Greg Abbott have decided to take matters into their own hands. Rather than trust the democratic process, they are rigging it.

“Earlier this year, Trump directed Republicans to redraw Congressional lines in Texas without community input, legislative approval, or adherence to the constitutional redistricting process that follows each census. Their goal was simple: steal five congressional seats in order to rig the midterm elections before it even starts.

Let me be clear: what happened in Texas was not democracy. The five seats stolen in Texas represented Black voices, Black leadership, and Black communities. It was a hostile takeover of representation — a brazen attempt to silence Black voices, undermine fair elections, and concentrate political power in the hands of a single man who has made no secret of his authoritarian ambitions.

That is why California is fighting back.

We in California watched that unfold, and understood what it meant. Because when you take away representation, you are also taking away resources — the funding for our schools, hospitals, and housing that flows from fair congressional apportionment. You are taking away the voices of those who depend on government to work for them, not against them.

That’s why we introduced Proposition 50 — a temporary, transparent, and fair measure that allows California to redraw its congressional map in response to the illegitimate redistricting taking place in states like Texas, Missouri, Florida, Indiana, and Ohio.

This is not about revenge. It is about defense. A moral defense of democracy — and a strategic offense to ensure that elections in 2026 are fair and representative.

Let me be very clear about what Proposition 50 is — and what it is not.

In California, our process is transparent. You will see the maps before you vote. You will see the districts drawn clearly on your ballot — not behind closed doors, not in secret political meetings.

Our process is fair. Proposition 50 does not eliminate Black or Brown seats; it protects them. It aligns with the Voting Rights Act, ensuring that diverse communities continue to have representation in Washington.

Our process is temporary. This is a short-term corrective measure that expires in 2030, when the next national census will trigger the regular, constitutionally mandated redistricting process and everything returns to normal.

So, this is not a permanent change — it is a lifeline. A stopgap against gerrymandering abuse. Keep in mind: This is bigger than one proposition. It’s about the future of our democracy — and the balance of power in Washington.

If Trump and his allies succeed, they will tilt the House of Representatives further to the right, silencing progressive voices and making it nearly impossible to hold him accountable. If we succeed, we can restore checks and balances. We can investigate abuses of power, protect voting rights, and ensure the power of the purse remains with the people, not a wannabe strongman. We can once again have subpoena power in Congress — the authority to demand answers and expose corruption. We can stop the assault on Medicaid, food stamps, housing programs, and education. That’s what Proposition 50 represents: not just a vote on maps, but a vote on freedom, fairness, and the future.

This fight started when Trump realized the polls were turning against him. After ramming through massive tax cuts for the wealthy, his administration expected praise. Instead, Americans said they wanted their health care protected. They wanted affordable housing. They wanted justice and fairness.

So, Trump decided to change the rules. He began looking for ways to keep the same unchecked power he’s enjoyed by silencing dissent and reshaping Congress in his image. His call to Governor Abbott wasn’t random. It was strategic.

We in California are setting a national precedent — that when democracy is under attack, states have both the right and the responsibility to defend it.

To those who say, “Why stoop to their level?” I say: because inaction is complicity. We cannot allow one man — or one party — to decide whose voices count and whose don’t. We cannot allow gerrymandering to become the new norm.

Proposition 50 is how we fight back and if you’re a Black voter, this fight is especially personal. If you care about having Black leaders in Congress who understand your lived experience, then you must vote YES on Prop 50. This is about more than politics. It’s about the power of our votes, our voice, and our unity.

Polling shows that Californians overwhelmingly support the measure — nearly 70% say they approve of the governor’s decision to stand up to Texas and protect representation.       But here’s the challenge: support alone won’t win this fight. Voting will.

That’s why I’m asking every Californian: don’t sit this one out. Whether you’re picking up your kids, grocery shopping, or heading to a movie — take a moment to fill out your ballot and send it in. And do it early.

Special elections are notoriously low-turnout affairs. There’s only one item on the ballot, and people are busy. But that’s exactly what those in power are counting on — our distraction and our fatigue. We cannot give them that advantage. Not when the very structure of our democracy hangs in the balance.

Every generation faces a moment when it must decide whether to protect or surrender the freedoms it inherited. This is our moment. Proposition 50 is a moral stand — a declaration that California will not let democracy die quietly.

Talk to your friends, your family, your coworkers. Make sure everyone you know understands what’s at stake. When we vote “Yes” on Proposition 50, we are voting for representation, for accountability, for justice, and for hope.

This is how we take back our power. This is how we ensure that our democracy. So, let’s get it done. Let’s fight back. Let’s vote “Yes” on Proposition 50.
