CARSON — Chavez High won its second straight L.A. City Section Division I championship by beating San Fernando 7-6 on a walk-off hit from Jessica Ramos at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday afternoon.

“All season long I tell the girls wins and losses do not determine your success,” Chavez coach Stephanie Boshae said. “It’s all the hard work you put in day out and day out at each practice, all the little accomplishments. Because all the little accomplishments add up to big things.”

Chavez’s Kailey Duran went 2 for 4 at the plate and pitched a complete game, giving up six hits. Viviana Villasenor was 3 for 4 with a double and four RBIs.

For San Fernando, Erika Deniz was 2 for 4 with a double and Natalia Hernandez was 1 for 4 with a two-run double.

Ramos’ walk-off hit gave the Eagles the two runs they needed to pull out the win. Ramos was walked three times and flew out to left field before coming up for her final at-bat.

With two outs and San Fernando leading 6-5, the sophomore belted the ball to right field and drove in Audrey Campos and Izabella Munoz for the dramatic victory.

“I wasn’t trying to do too much,” Ramos said. “A single would at least tie it up instead of popping up.”

The Tigers scored two runs in the top of the first inning for early momentum. Zoila Vitela was walked, then Deniz drove her in with a double. Melissa Cabrera hit a ground out to get Deniz home.

Villasenor’s single to left field scored a run for Chavez in the first inning and then she hit a two-run triple in the second inning to help put the Eagles up 4-2.

“She can work the whole field,” Boshae said. “She’s a competitor and she knows how to spray the whole field.”

Villasenor extended the lead to 5-2 in the fourth inning with a double, but the Tigers scored three runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game.

Hernandez’s two-run double started the rally and Bernie Villegas’ sacrifice fly to right field evened the score.

“I want them to go home with their heads held high and knowing that they played a heck of a game against one of the top teams,” San Fernando coach Danny Arguello said.

Villegas singled to score Mariana Briones in the sixth inning, but Ramos put the game away in the seventh inning to give Chavez its fifth overall City Section title and the fourth in Boshae’s tenure.

“You’ve gotta work hard even on the days you don’t want to,” Boshae said. “And you just keep going for it and the girls buy in, they work hard and they see the good things come.”
