There were a lot of familiar names mentioned as possible top candidates, many of them connected to Crespi in different ways. But the school decided to go “out of network,” so to speak, and hired Brad Vonnahme as the new head coach for its football team, the school announced Tuesday night.

Vonnahme was an assistant coach at Fresno State, in charge of defensive quality control, this past season, and he has a lot of coaching experience at the collegiate level. He’s coached at Wayne State College, Midland University, University of Hawaii, Utah State, University of Sioux Falls and was a student manager at Nebraska.

In a statement announcing the hiring, the school said of Vonnahme: “Originally from the Midwest, Brad is a product of K-12 Catholic education. Brad is a proud graduate of an all-boys Catholic High School so he will be right at home at Crespi.”

Vonnahme takes over a Crespi team that went 0-10 this past season and 2-7 in 2021 under Dameon Porter, who was the coach for five seasons.

“My family and I are humbled and honored to be joining the Crespi community,” Vonnahme said in a statement. “As a graduate and former football player of an all-boys college prep school, I am familiar with the unique experience of being a student-athlete at an academically prestigious institution like Crespi … “

Vonnahme’s biggest challenge will likely be attracting local talent to the program as an outsider.

Former Crespi standout Bryan Bennett, who was on the football staff this past season, said he is willing to stay and help Vonnahme as needed. Keeping Bennett around could be a huge help for the new coach.
