Disneyland auditioning actors for new Hyperion Theater musical in summer 2023

Disneyland’s entertainment team is preparing to bring the Hyperion Theater out of mothballs after three years of inactivity with a new Broadway-caliber theatrical production returning in summer 2023.

“We’re excited to be exploring a new, limited-time offering for the Summer of 2023 and looking forward to sharing more at a later date,” according to Disneyland officials.

Disney Live Entertainment has posted a casting call notice for actors, singers and dancers for a new limited-run musical in the Hyperion Theater at Disney California Adventure, according to the official Disney audition website. Auditions will be held on Feb. 26 at an undisclosed location in Anaheim.

The new show will be written by Tony-nominee Hunter Bell with music by Grammy-winner Christopher Lennertz. Bell wrote the book for “Villains Tonight” on the Disney Cruise Line, according to Broadway World. Lennertz served as music director on Disneyland’s new “Wondrous Journeys” fireworks show.

The key roles for the new Hyperion Theater show call for:

A young man coming into his greatness
A brave, resourceful and intelligent woman with a strong English accent
A decisive, capable and principled man with a wry sense of humor who leads others with attitude and swagger
A nobleman who is a loyal, idealistic and romantic do-gooder that doesn’t give up easily
A fun, energetic and musical sisterhood trio that acts as a Greek Chorus

The roles described in the casting call line up “almost perfectly” with Hercules, Meg, Hades and The Fates from the 1997 “Hercules” from Disney’s animation studio, according to WDW News Today.

A live-action version of Disney’s Hercules is in the works with Guy Ritchie directing and the Russo Brothers attached as producers, according to Collider.

An off-Broadway “mythical new musical adventure” of Disney’s Hercules is playing at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey from Feb. 16 to March 19.

The Disney Cruise Line has produced a Broadway-style show based on “Hercules” that would be primed and ready to step up to the next level at a Disney theme park.

The Hyperion Theater has served as a proving ground for shortened one-act versions of Broadway-bound musicals based on the Disney films “Aladdin” and “Frozen.”

“Frozen: Live at the Hyperion” was the last show to play at the 2,000-seat venue before the theater went dark in 2020 during the yearlong pandemic closure of DCA and Disneyland. The theater has stood vacant since the Anaheim theme parks reopened in 2021.
