Dodgers held to five hits in loss to A’s

THE GAME: The Dodgers were held to three hits in a 6-3 loss to the Oakland A’s Sunday afternoon at Camelback Ranch.

PITCHING REPORT: Right-hander Dustin May went a ragged four innings. He gave up a two-run home run to Shea Langerliers in the first inning then loaded the bases in the second inning with a single and two walks after there were two outs. He struck out Ryan Noda to end that inning and retired seven of the final eight batters he faced, throwing 72 pitches over his four innings. … Jimmy Nelson started the fifth inning. He threw 14 pitches. Only one was a strike (the 13th pitch). He walked three batters, hit another and threw a wild pitch that scored a run. Over his past two outings, Nelson has walked seven of the nine batters he has faced and hit another. … Top pitching prospect Gavin Stone struck out eight in three scoreless innings.

HITTING REPORT: The Dodgers didn’t have a hit off A’s starter Shintaro Fujinami until Patrick Mazeika’s two-out double in the fifth inning. They did score a run off Fujinami in the third inning thanks to three walks and a sacrifice fly by Freddie Freeman. … Making his first Cactus League appearance, the Dodgers’ top pick in last year’s draft, Dalton Rushing, drove in a run with a bloop single. … Jose Ramos had a double and scored a run in the ninth.

DEFENSE REPORT: Outfield prospect Jose Ramos made the defensive play of the day in the top of the ninth inning. He ran in and caught a shallow fly ball in foul territory then threw a runner out at home, trying to tag up on the play. Catcher David Freitas blocked the plate.
