Election 2022: Here’s how LA County’s state Senate races are turning out

Eight state Senate seats were up for grabs across Los Angeles County, as voters cast ballots in the Nov. 8 statewide general election.

And the state Senate districts on the ballot touch every corner of LA County, from the San Fernando Valley to the South Bay, with some even bleeding into other counties.

Here’s a look at how the races after the Los Angeles County registrar released semi-official results from the 2022 statewide general election shortly before 4 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9. The next update in Los Angeles County results is expected Friday.

District 20: The race for this redrawn Latino-majority district, which stretches from Burbank to Pacoima to San Fernando to Canoga Park, features a pair of Democrats and San Fernando Valley natives, Daniel Hertzberg — the son of state Senate Majority leader and former Assembly Speaker Bob Hertzberg — and Caroline Menjivar, a Marine Corps veteran and LGBTQ advocate.  Menjivar snagged 54% of the vote to Hertzberg’s 47.5%.

District 22: Democratic state Sen. Susan Rubio is trying to win reelection against Vincent Tsai, a Republican deputy sheriff from San Dimas. The borders of the former all-San Gabriel Valley district have shifted east to add Chino, Montclair and Ontario from San Bernardino County. Rubio snagged 55% of the vote early Wednesday.

District 24: State Sen. Ben Allen, D-Santa Monica, is facing Republican Kristina Irwin after the former began his reelection bid by crushing the field during the June primary. District 24 has been retooled to include Calabasas, the Westside, Hollywood and chunks of the South Bay. Allen snagged 62% of the vote.

District 26: This newly redrawn district includes Los Feliz, Echo Park, Koreatown, Little Tokyo, Chinatown, Boyle Heights and El Sereno. Incumbent Maria Elena Durazo, a Democrat who received 99.6% of the vote in June, is facing Republican Claudia Agraz, a community outreach organizer. Durazo snared nearly 80% of the ballots so far.

District 28: Educator and community organizer Lola Smallwood-Cuevas and civil rights lawyer Cheryl Turner, both Democrats, are vying to become the new state Senator for this district, which includes downtown Los Angeles and most of South Central LA. Smallwood-Cuevas led, 56% to Turner’s 44%.

Election 2022: Here are updated results for LA County congressional districts

District 36: Republican Assemblywoman Janet Nguyen and Huntington Beach Councilwoman Kim Carr, a Democrat, share some similar policies locally but differ on hot-button national issues such as abortion. They are scrapping over a district dominated by coastal Orange County — including Little Saigon — but that also incudes Cerritos. In early returns, Nguyen grabbed 58% of the votes so far.
