Election 2022: Polls close in Los Angeles, results coming soon

Election Day is over — but election night has just begun.

The polls have closed in the 2022 statewide general election, meaning the chance to vote has passed and all that’s left is to find out who has won the myriad federal, state, county and local races.

And with 5.6 million registered voters in Los Angeles County, that may take awhile.

But that doesn’t mean we won’t get an initial look on Tuesday evening, Nov. 8.

The LA County registrar’s office is expected to release the initial round of results, composed entirely of vote-by-mail ballots that arrived before Election Day, around 8:45 p.m. Tuesday. The registrar’s office will then periodically update the results with more ballots — first those cast at Vote Centers before Tuesday, followed by those cast on Election Day — throughout the night.

Of course, it will still be a few weeks before we know, for certain, how many of these races ended.

Vote-by-mail ballots have seven days after Tuesday to arrive to the registrar’s office, if they’re postmarked by Election Day. The registrar also must verify provisional and damaged ballots, as well as those with write-in candidates.

The registrar has 30 days after Tuesday to certify the election, and is tentatively scheduled to do so on Dec. 5.

Still, it’s worth seeing how the early returns look on election night.

So below is a roundup of Los Angeles and LA area races we’re following. Just click on the links to learn more — and see the results as they come in.
