Election 2022: These are the Assembly seats up for grabs in LA County on Nov. 8

Voters in two-dozen state Assembly districts across Los Angeles County are heading to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 8, the final day to cast ballots in the 2022 statewide general election.

The various distructs span everything from the eastern edges of the county, where Pomona bridges the Inland Empire, to the coast.

The polls close at 8 p.m. Tuesday. The first batch of returns — composed entirely of vote-by-mail ballots that arrived before Election Day — are set to be released shortly after.

Below is a roundup of the Assembly races that involve LA County. Check back here after the polls close to see how things are shaking out.

Assemblymembers Tom Lackey, R-Palmdale, and Thurston “Smitty” Smith, R-Apple Valley, found themselves sharing a district — the new Assembly District 34 — after boundary lines were redrawn in December. Now the two incumbent Republicans are facing off on Nov. 8, with only one of them returning to Sacramento as a legislator in January. (Photos by Beau Yarbrough, The Sun/SCNG)

34th District: This district’s area is immense, stretching over two counties, from Lancaster and Palmdale to Barstow. Republican Assemblymen Tom Lackey and Thurston Smith have both espoused conservative principals as they vie for a district the two lawmakers now share because of redistricting.

Juan Carrillo, Paul Marsh

39th District: This newly redrawn district stretches from Palmdale to Victorville, where Democrat and Palmdale Councilman Juan Carrillo and Republican Paul Marsh, who served in the U.S. Army, are competing against each other.

They are vying to represent a district that encompasses the northern end of the San Fernando Valley north to Santa Clarita.
