Federal agents conducted a search of the Los Angeles Deputy Mayor Brian Williams’ home on Tuesday, escalating a high-profile investigation into allegations that he issued a bomb threat against City Hall earlier this year.
On Wednesday, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’s office confirmed the search and announced that Williams had been placed on administrative leave. The specifics and timing of the alleged bomb threat remain undisclosed. Police, however, determined that there was no immediate danger to the public after investigating.
“Earlier this year the LAPD responded to a bomb threat made against Los Angeles City Hall,” a statement from the department read. “Our initial investigation revealed that the source of the threat was likely from Brian Williams, Deputy Mayor for Public Safety. Due to the Department’s working relationship with Mr. Williams, the investigation was referred to the FBI. The FBI remains the investigating agency.”
While the dramatic turn of events casts serious doubt on the conduct of a prominent city official, those close to Williams struggle to reconcile the allegations with his character. They insist such behavior is entirely uncharacteristic, suggesting there may be more to the story than meets the eye.
“I’ve known Brian Williams for over 30 years and have known him to be a decent, honest, credible, well-regarded person—the closest thing to a choir boy you’ll ever meet,” said Kerman Maddox, who leads Dakota Communications, one of the city’s well respected public policy firms. “I don’t believe the Brian Williams I know would do anything like what is alleged. His life work has been in and around law enforcement and most recently he worked on law enforcement reform activities. No one who knows him, believes this.”
Williams, who was appointed Deputy Mayor of Public Safety in February 2023, holds a pivotal role overseeing critical city departments, including the LAPD, the Los Angeles Fire Department, and the police units at LAX and the Port of Los Angeles.
His extensive career in public service includes heading the Los Angeles County Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission and a previous tenure as deputy mayor under Mayor James Hahn, where he managed public works and the L.A. Department of Transportation.
FBI officials have declined to comment, and Williams has made no public statements. As of now, no arrests have been made.
The episode marks a pivotal moment for the Southern California native, a family man, married with two sons who holds both a B.A. in Political Science and a Juris Doctorate from UCLA. His legal career includes trying over 100 cases as a criminal defense and civil litigation attorney.
