Fairview fire near Hemet leads to emergency declaration in Riverside County

In response to the Fairview fire burning near Hemet, Riverside County on Wednesday, Sept. 7, declared a local emergency.

The proclamation still needs to be approved by the Riverside County Board of Supervisors, a county news release states. That step is scheduled for the board’s Tuesday, Sept. 13, meeting.

The emergency declaration could help “make the county eligible for potential federal and state assistance and cost reimbursement,” the release states. The proclamation also allows the county to more easily secure services and items to address the emergency conditions.

The fire broke out Labor Day — Monday, Sept. 5 — near Hemet. As of Wednesday evening, it had charred nearly 10,000 acres. Containment was estimated at 5%.

The blaze has killed two, forced evacuations and shut schools in the Hemet Unified School District for the rest of this week.
