At the recent American Black Film Festival in Miami, Gabrielle Union shared some sobering insights on the financial realities of acting during a “Sisterhood & Savings” panel.
“I don’t have the luxury of taking all the independent films that I want because I can’t afford to pay for my extended family in the way that they have grown accustomed to,” said Union, who is married to NBA legend Dwyane Wade. “I have to factor in endorsements and brands and brand building… We don’t get paid what y’all think that we get paid, and that check is split so many ways. You have to have multiple revenue streams to do the job that you really love.”
Reflecting on broader industry inequities, Union added, “There was something that I think broke in a lot of us watching Taraji on The Color Purple press tour where she’s trying with as much grace as she can muster to explain this business and explain what is right and explain who gets what and why and how Black actresses, no matter how accomplished, no matter how many asses we put in the seats, no matter how much our overall box office is, over $1,000,000,000, by the way, it never seems to impact our value.”
Chris Paul’s Good Eat’n Expands to 1,000+ Walmart Stores Nationwide
Plant-based snack brand Good Eat’n, founded by NBA star Chris Paul, is scaling up its retail footprint with a national rollout in more than 1,000 Walmart locations across the U.S. The expansion follows strong regional performance at Texas-based retailer H-E-B and marks a major milestone in the brand’s growth in the better-for-you snack market.
“Expanding with Walmart is such a proud moment,” said Paul. “As someone who loves to snack, I know how hard it is to find better-for-you options that are flavorful… Everyone loves the taste of Good Eat’n—once they try it, they love it.”
CEO April Siler highlighted the strategic significance of the partnership: “With about 90% of Americans living within 10 miles of a Walmart, this move accelerates our mission to make plant-based snacking more accessible and mainstream.”
