Gio Reyna on USMNT roster for CONCACAF Nations League

Borussia Dortmund’s Gio Reyna will make his return into the U.S. men’s national soccer team roster for the CONCACAF Nations League later this month.

U.S. Soccer revealed the 24-man roster Wednesday that will be in camp under interim coach Anthony Hudson for games against Grenada (March 24) and El Salvador (March 27).

Reyna, who was on the World Cup roster in Qatar, saw limited time and then became subject of a soap opera feud involving his parents, coach Gregg Berhalter and the U.S. Soccer Federation.

“As I’ve said before, the situation during the World Cup was handled as a group, there was a positive response from the player, and we all moved forward,” Hudson said. “Clearly it became a bit more complex in the months since the World Cup, but as far as we’re concerned Gio is a part of our program.”

Complex is certainly an understatement.

In the days following the World Cup, Berhalter at a conference in New York City spoke about a player’s detrimental behavior during the World Cup. He never mentioned the 20-year-old Reyna, but it was apparent of whom he was speaking.

Reyna’s enraged parents – former U.S. soccer star Claudio Reyna and his wife Danielle – called Earnie Stewart, then U.S. Soccer’s Sporting Director, with details of an incident between Berhalter and his wife Rosalind in which Berhalter had a physical encounter when the two were students and dating at North Carolina. That led to U.S. Soccer launching an investigation into the matter.

Upon his return to Borussia Dortmund after the World Cup, Reyna scored a pair of game-winning goals.

Hudson, who was placed in the interim role starting with the January camp, said there was no hesitation from Reyna in regards to coming back into the national team camp.

“He’s a good guy and a top talent and he is evaluated like any other player,” Hudson said. “We made the roster decisions based on what gives the team the best opportunity to win these games, and we brought him in because we think he can help us do that.”

Midfielder Tyler Adams (hamstring) will be not in the camp. Adams, who plays at Leeds United, will miss the club’s game Saturday against Wolverhampton. The club didn’t give a timetable for his return.
