St. Francis boys basketball coach Todd Wolfson said it weeks before the high school basketball season started.

“I can say with confidence this is probably the best (high school basketball) league in the country. If not the top, then top two or three,” he said in October on Mission League media day.

Let the games begin.

The Mission League will begin league play Friday night. Notre Dame will play at Loyola, Alemany is at Harvard-Westlake, Chaminade will travel to Sierra Canyon, and the most intriguing matchup on opening night will be Crespi at St. Francis. All games are schedule for 7 p.m.

It will kick off a much-anticipated single round of games before the league’s end-of-year tournament Jan. 30 through Feb. 3 hosted by Alemany.

Mission League boys, girls basketball will showcase country’s best talent

Harvard-Westlake, Sierra Canyon and Notre Dame are vying for CIF Southern Section Open Division berths, while St. Francis, Crespi and Loyola are likely eyeing a fourth-place finish that will earn an automatic qualification to its respective playoff divisions.
