La Cañada Flintridge — Jackson Mosley’s eyes widened when asked if he remembers his first Mission League game.

“It’s a whole different level,” the St. Francis point guard said. “Everything is up. The intensity, the tempo, the skill and the game planning.”

He was a freshman then. He’s a senior now, and the level he’s talking about is something he’s accustomed to, and it was on display in St. Francis’ 48-42 victory over Crespi at home in a Mission League opener Friday night.

Mosley scored the Golden Knights’ first eight points, tallied 14 in the first half, and finished 21 points to pace St. Francis offensively, but it was the defense that stood out.

“Defense was the focus all week in practice,” Mosley said. “We over-watched film.”

Crespi freshman Joe Sterling, who is averaging 20.5 points per game, received a heavy dose of that heightened competition in his Mission League debut Friday night. The learning curve was apparent. He was held to just five points. His one field goal didn’t come until the fourth quarter.

“Our game plan was to shut down Joe Sterling and contain Peyton White,” Mosley said.

Sophomore Peyton White had 13 points and six rebounds for the Celts (15-4, 0-1).

St. Francis (15-4, 1-0) took a 23-16 lead into halftime before creating separation in the opening five minutes of the third quarter, extending its lead to 32-16.

Crespi was scoreless for the first five minutes of the third frame.

“That was one of the best defensive efforts from one of my teams. I’m very proud,” St. Francis coach Todd Wolfson said. “They followed the game plan.”

The Celts got within 41-34 with 3:38 to play, but a Brandin Dantzler basket created a nine-point lead that was too large to erase.

Late shot clock. A little head tap action. Greg Gazarian with some dazzle at the rim.
