Kings’ Trevor Moore gets 5-year, $21 million extension

Thousand Oaks native Trevor Moore will be staying close to home for another five seasons after he and the Kings agreed to a contract extension worth $21 million that will run through the 2027-28 season.

The deal carries an annual average value of $4.2 million. Top pairing defenseman Mikey Anderson and No. 1 goalie Jonathan Quick are now the most prominent Kings not yet under contract for next season.

Moore, 27, was an unsigned free agent out of the University of Denver and began his professional career in the Toronto Maple Leafs’ organization. He played sparingly, contributing 13 points in 52 games over the course of two seasons, before being traded to the Kings. He was dealt along with draft picks in exchange for Jack Campbell and Kyle Clifford in February 2020.

Initially serving as a sort of Swiss Army knife player who played all three forward positions, killed penalties and shifted around the lineup, Moore moved nearer to the Kings’ nucleus last season. From Jan. 1 onward, he notched 41 points in 49 games, solidifying himself as part of the second line and demonstrating uncommon chemistry with center Phillip Danault. Moore also accumulated six points in his first seven playoff games in last year’s first-round series against the Edmonton Oilers.

Moore started this season with 16 points in 21 games before tapering off with just two in his past 11 appearances. Moore has led the team in shots on goal and ranks first among Kings wingers with at least 10 games played in average shorthanded time on ice. He’s also seen his minutes on the power play more than double from 2021-22 to 2022-23, and his six power-play points are two more than he’d scored in his entire career prior to this season.

His 107 career points place him seventh all-time among NHL players born in California, a list that also includes Dallas Stars standout Jason Robertson (Arcadia) and the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Hart Trophy winner Auston Matthews (San Ramon), though Matthews was raised in Arizona.

In addition to his exploits in the NHL, Moore represented the United States at the 2021 World Championships, helping his country to a bronze medal with nine points in 10 matches.

Moore and the Kings finish a six-game road trip in Boston on Thursday and return home for a showdown with the San Jose Sharks on Saturday.
