L.A. Councilman Curren Price Arraignment Trial Delayed Again

The scheduled arraignment for Councilmember Curren Price is delayed again after Judge Craig Richman of the Los Angeles County Superior Court mentioned that he has yet to examine the court documents related to the defense’s legal challenge. Price is now due in court on Jan. 8.

“We are looking forward to engaging with the DA in the coming weeks, and we are grateful that the Court has given us time to do so,” Price said in a statement.

The 72-year-old city councilman was charged with five counts of grand theft by embezzlement of government funds, three counts of perjury, and two counts of conflict of interest on June 13. Price was released without bail but had to undergo fingerprinting and booking procedures.

His defense attorneys contended in a court filing that the five counts of grand theft by embezzlement against Price are “barred by the statute of limitations.” In November, his legal defense team filed a demurrer, challenging the sufficiency of the prosecutor’s complaint.

“Even if our demurrer [motion] was denied, the problems with the prosecution’s case are undeniable,” said Michael V Schafler, one of the attorneys representing Price in a statement.

“They will only become clearer once the prosecution is required to put forth evidence of probable cause that Councilmember Price is guilty of a crime,” Schafler added. “We anticipate the prosecution will be unable to meet that burden, and we believe this case never should have been filed.”

A coalition of esteemed clergy members and South Central LA residents recently united to support LA City Councilmember Curren Price. The event took place on Dec. 11, including a candlelight vigil and a special service at McCoy Memorial Baptist Church.

“Though the clouds of accusation may cast shadows, Councilmember Price’s servant heart shines bright,” said Pastor Shep Crawford of the Experience Christian Ministries (ECM). “He continues to be a beacon of hope and support for the people of the Ninth District, and in the mighty force of truth—justice will surely prevail.”
