The upcoming biopic Michael is already generating enormous buzz, promising a sweeping look at the life and legacy of the King of Pop. If the newly released trailer is any indication, audiences can expect a visually striking, music-driven spectacle that recreates many of the iconic moments that made Michael Jackson one of the most influential entertainers in history.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua and set for release April 24, 2026, the two-hour and ten-minute film traces Jackson’s journey from child prodigy with the Jackson 5 to global superstar. Stepping into the role is Jackson’s real-life nephew, Jaafar Jackson, whose uncanny resemblance and precise recreation of his uncle’s voice, movement and stage presence have already generated buzz.

“It’s Michael’s spirit that comes through in a magical way,” said Fuqua. “You have to still focus on the human being to understand who he was.”

“He’s a complicated human being and I think the film will tell the story of a very complicated person,” said Colman Domingo, who turns in a powerful performance as Joe Jackon, Michael’s father. The supporting cast underscores the film’s ambition, featuring Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, Miles Teller as attorney John Branca, Kat Graham as Motown icon Diana Ross, Larenz Tate as Motown founder Berry Gordy and Laura Harrier as music executive Suzanne de Passe.

Y even as anticipation builds, the film arrives with a larger question surrounding it. Jackson’s music remains untouchable, but his story is far more complex. Allegations of child sexual abuse followed the superstar for decades—claims he denied and for which he was acquitted in a widely watched 2005 trial. The debate around his legacy was reignited by the documentary Leaving Neverland.

There is also speculation that Michael may be only the first chapter of a larger story. Industry rumors suggest the project could ultimately be split into two films, with the first installment focusing largely on Jackson’s early rise to fame and the second exploring the extraordinary heights of his global superstardom alongside the controversies that later complicated his public image.

Despite the lingering questions, excitement for the film is undeniable. The first teaser racked up massive viewership online, becoming one of the most watched trailer debuts for a music biopic. Industry watchers already predict the film could become a major box-office force.

Whether Michael ultimately offers a triumphant celebration or a deeper portrait of one of music’s most complicated legends remains to be seen—but the world will certainly be watching.
