Patrick Sandoval strikes out 6 in final Angels outing before WBC

THE GAMES: The Angels beat the Cincinnati Reds, 8-4, in Tempe, Ariz., and lost to the Texas Rangers, 7-5, in Surprise, Ariz., in split-squad games Sunday. The Angels are 5-4-1 this spring.

PITCHING REPORT: In Tempe, LHP Patrick Sandoval gave up one run in three innings in his final outing before leaving to join Team Mexico for the World Baseball Classic. Sandoval struck out six and did not walk any. Sandoval will start for Mexico against the USA next Sunday. … RHP Ben Joyce pitched a perfect inning. It was the second straight outing in which the Angels have used Joyce as the first reliever of the game, an effort to see him against big league hitters. He has not allowed a run in three innings. … LHP Aaron Loup worked a scoreless inning. … RHP Ryan Tepera gave up three runs, two earned. He hit a batter, but the Reds also had an infield hit and another hitter reached on an error. … LHP Jose Quijada and RHP Andrew Wantz each worked a scoreless inning. Neither has allowed a run yet in three outings. It was Quijada’s last outing with the Angels before leaving to join Team Venezuela for the WBC. … In Surprise, LHP José Suarez gave up two runs in 1-2/3 innings in his first start of the spring. He gave up three hits. … RHP Austin Warren worked his third scoreless inning in three appearances.

HITTING REPORT: In Tempe, Jake Lamb was hit on the hand by a pitch, but umpires ruled he was swinging, so they sent him back to the plate. He then singled. Lamb also doubled, improving to 4 for 12 this spring. … Mike Trout drove in a run with a double into left-center in his fourth at-bat of the game. Trout also played seven innings in center field as he tunes up for the WBC next weekend. He will DH for the Angels on Monday and then leave. … Taylor Ward pulled a two-run double down the left-field line, snapping a tie. Ward is 4 for 10 this spring. … Anthony Rendon drew two walks. Rendon is 3 for 7 with a homer this spring. … In Surprise, Brett Phillips had his first hit of the spring, a triple. Phillips is 1 for 16. … Gio Urshela drove in two runs with a single. Urshela is 5 for 15, … Jo Adell was hitless in three at-bats, with two strikeouts. Adell is 2 for 17 with 10 strikeouts. … Jordyn Adams, formerly one of the Angels’ top prospects, had a double and a single.

DEFENSE REPORT: In Tempe, second baseman Brandon Drury made a high throw to first after Elly De La Cruz slid into him, trying to break up the double play. … Left fielder Orlando Martinez, who was up from minor league camp for the game, made a diving catch. Martinez also recorded the other two outs in the inning, both on catches at the warning track. … Shortstop Livan Soto was too slow on his throw to first on a routine grounder, and De La Cruz beat it out for an infield hit. … In Surprise, catcher Chad Wallach made two throwing errors.
