THE GAME: The Angels snapped a tie with a run in the eighth, beating the Milwaukee Brewers, 3-2, on Thursday afternoon in Maryvale, Ariz. The game featured the first two at-bats decided by timer violations of the spring for the Angels.
PITCHING REPORT: Left-hander Reid Detmers did not allow a base runner until giving up a homer to Luke Voit leading off the fifth. It was the first time this spring that Detmers allowed a run on his own. The others came when baserunners he had left scored against relievers. Detmers allowed one run and two hits in his five-inning start, with six strikeouts and no walks. Detmers had a few strikeouts on sliders that were 90-91 mph. “That was really good,” Manager Phil Nevin said. “You can just see the swings that good hitters are taking off him. It’s fun to watch right now.” Detmers has increased the velocity of his fastball and slider this season. He has a 2.08 ERA in 13 innings this spring. … Right-hander Carlos Estévez gave up one run and walked three in his inning. One of the walks came after he was charged with a timer violation with a full count. It was the first time this spring an Angels pitcher was charged with a violation with a three-ball count. Nevin said Estévez had an issue with the PitchCom. … Right-hander Ryan Tepera pitched a perfect eighth inning. He’s allowed one run in four innings this spring.
HITTING REPORT: Jo Adell had a single in four at-bats. Adell was also called out on strikes when he failed to get back into the box and be ready for the pitch in time. It was the first time this spring that an Angels player was charged with a third strike because of a timer violation. “He knows he had a timeout too, so that’s a learning moment,” Nevin said. … Jared Walsh had two hits, improving to 8 for 25 (.320) this spring. He has three hits in his last six at-bats. … Brandon Drury pulled a double down the left field line, his fourth extra-base hit among his eight hits this spring. Drury has a .974 OPS in 29 plate appearances. … Logan O’Hoppe singled and walked. O’Hoppe is 5 for 20 (.250) with a .798 OPS this spring. … Andrew Velazquez drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth with a sacrifice fly to the warning track in left. Velazquez, who abandoned switch-hitting this spring, is 3 for 21 (.143) against right-handed pitchers as a right-handed batter. He’s 1 for 7 (.143) against lefties.
