The deputy was shot on a residential street at about 1:45 p.m. near Rustic Lane Elementary School in the Rubidoux neighborhood of Jurupa Valley. The streets have been blocked off in the area.

The suspect, at the wheel of a black pickup truck, fled the area, culminating in a pursuit that traveled at least two freeways in the Riverside metropolitan area.

Witnesses said that the alleged gunman, whose identity was not released, was waving at other motorists as he drove southbound on Interstate 15 with a phalanx of law enforcement vehicles from the sheriff’s department and California Highway Patrol on his tail.

The chase came to an abrupt end on the southbound15 Freeway at Fourth Street in Norco, where the suspect’s vehicle may have been disabled by a spike strip.

Brett Lester, 36, who lives near where the deputy was shot, said his overriding emotion was anger. “They put their lives on the line every day and then some idiot who doesn’t want to go to jail does this,” he said.

This is a developing story. More information will be added as it becomes available.
