VALENCIA — The Saugus High football team relied on its physical defense in a 14-6 win over Hart in a classic Foothill League rivalry game Friday.

“Anytime you compete and you’re victorious over a Hart team that’s coached by a Herrington brother you’re pretty excited, said Saugus coach Jason Bornn. “Our kids competed. They did everything they needed to do and we were able to squeak out a win.”

The Saugus front seven led by outside linebacker Deohn Turner, who had two sacks in the game, was causing problems for Hart quarterback Timmy Larkins all night with constant pressure. Saugus had five sacks in the game as a team. Hart running back Donovan Dunn was held to 11 carries for 40 yards and one touchdown, the lone score for Hart.

Saugus receiver AJ Goodman was able to convert on a couple of explosive plays for the Centurions with one being a 70-yard touchdown reception at the end of the first half for a 14-0 lead. Goodman finished the game with three catches for 113 yards.

“We needed those plays. I needed those plays for the team just to help them out,” said Goodman.

Saugus dominated the game in the first half giving up only three first downs to Hart while the offense was moving the ball well. Saugus was unable to score on two long drives that ended deep in Hart territory stopped on fourth down. Saugus’ offense was finally able to score on a 1-yard touchdown run from Vinny Gallagher to make it 7-0 in the second quarter.

“I thought the offensive performance was outstanding, when the O-line’s driving people down the field, the quarterback is slinging the ball to all our playmakers, it was a great night.” said Gallagher.

Gallagher finished the game with 14 carries for 51 yards with a touchdown and four receptions for 55 yards. Saugus quarterback TJ Cataldi finished 14 of 24 for 233 yards and one touchdown pass.

“I think our defense is playing well, they’re working hard, we’re still trying to figure some things out and hopefully we can win a few games to end the season.” said Hart coach Rick Herrington.

Larkins finished 16 of 32 with 109 yards for Hart. Shawn Irwin had six receptions for 98 yards for the Indians.

Saugus improves to 5-2, bouncing back from a 43-6 loss to West Ranch, and will take on Castaic next week at home. Hart falls to 1-6 and will take on Canyon next week.
