Scattered thunderstorms and lightning touched down along the Southern California coastline early Wednesday, Oct. 12, with additional showers in the afternoon expected in the mountains and valleys.
A flood advisory is in effect until 3:45 p.m. in parts of the San Gabriel Mountains, with National Weather Service officials warning that the rainfall could cause flooding and mud and debris flow near the recent burn-scar areas. The potential downpour could bring up to nearly an inch of rain in the mountains, said NWS meteorologist Ryan Kittell, but some areas might not catch any.

“Its still uncertain at this point — we’re under an unstable moisture mask where showers could form anywhere,” Kittell said. “We’ll most likely see this in the mountains and deserts west of L.A. County.”

Coastal Orange County cities received some rain in the early morning. The county could get more showers in the inland and mountain communities in the evening as the low-pressure system continued its way northwest.
Morning lightning strikes near the coastline prompted officials to temporarily close Los Angeles County and Huntington beaches. They were later reopened, in the afternoon.
Heading into the evening, thunderstorms would likely be confined to over the mountains in San Bernardino and Riverside, said NWS meteorologist Samantha Connolly. The San Bernardino Mountains were already seeing some heavy rainfall and hail in the afternoon.
Thursday will also see another chance for thunderstorms in the San Bernardino and Riverside mountains, though they would likely remain over the mountains and high deserts. The pockets of rain were expected to bring about a few tenths of an inch, Connolly said.
