Veterans Day events across LA county to honor those who served

Cities across Los Angeles County will hold ceremonies and other events over the weekend to celebrate Veterans Day — which honors those who served in the United States Armed Forces.

Veterans Day is on Friday, Nov. 11.

Here’s a taste of some of the Veterans Day events taking place throughout the Southland. For more events near you, check your local city’s website.

Alhambra: The city, along with American Legion Post 139, will host a Veterans Day Celebration featuring live music and a continental breakfast at 10 a.m. Friday at Alhambra Park, 500 N. Palm Ave. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m.

Burbank: The city will its Veterans Day ceremony on Friday at McCambridge Park, 1515 N. Glenoaks Blvd. A pre-ceremony concert will begin at 10:15 a.m. The actual ceremony will bein at 11 a.m.

Carson: The Veterans Day Celebration will take place at 10 a.m. Friday at Veterans Park, 22400 Montea Ave. There will be patriotic music, a veterans museum display and a community barbecue.

Cerritos: Cerritos invites the community to the Veterans Day celebration on Friday at the Cerritos Civic Center, near the Veterans Memorial, 18125 Bloomfield Ave. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. and feature a patriotic selection performed by the Cerritos College Community Band. There will be comments from dignitaries, a wreath laying and a moment of silence, as well as patriotic crafts for children.

Downey: The Veterans Day Ceremony for Downey will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Columbia Memorial Space Center, 12400 Columbia Way. It will feature a live patriotic performance and participation from the Downey American Legion Post, and local Boy Scouts of America and Cub Scout troops. Refreshments will be provided.

Hermosa Beach: Hermosa Beach will hold a Veterans Day Wreath Ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Friday on the East Lawn of the Community Center, 710 Pier Ave. The ceremony will be followed by a reception featuring the city’s “Veterans Are Timeless” campaign.

Long Beach: The Alpert Jewish Community Center will honor veterans with a commemoration and exhibit at 11 a.m. Friday. Attendees will hear from local veterans, guest speakers, clergy and leaders from across the Jewish community. People will be able to experience the Jewish American History exhibit in the Alpert JCC Gatov Gallery on the Weinberg Jewish Long Beach Campus, 3801 Willow St.

Long Beach: The 2022 Veterans Day Celebration will take place from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at Houghton Park, 6301 Myrtle Ave. The event will feature live musical performances by Knight Ryder and local Long Beach DJ Dennis Owens, as well as a resource fair with various community organizations providing services and resources for veterans.

Los Angeles: The Forest Lawn Veterans Day Celebration will be held at 11 a.m. Friday. Those interested in watching the ceremony can do so in-person at the park, 6300 Forest Lawn Drive, or on Facebook Live. More information on the livestream can be found at forestlawn.com.

Manhattan Beach: The 25th annual Veterans Day Ceremony will honor U.S. military veterans at 11 a.m. Friday at the intersection of Valley Drive and Ardmore Avenue. In the event of inclement weather, the location will change to the Joslyn Community Center, 1601 N. Valley Drive.

Pacoima: The annual San Fernando Valley Veterans Day Parade will take place in-person on Friday after a two-year hiatus. The parade will run along Laurel Canyon Boulevard, between San Fernando Mission Boulevard and Paxton Street. Informaton: sfvveteransdayparade.com.

Pasadena: The Pasadena Veterans Day Committee, in collaboration with Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 446, and American Legion Pasadena Post No. 13, invites the community to attend this year’s commemoration at 10:30 a.m.  Friday at City Hall, 100 N. Garfield Ave. The ceremony’s featured speaker is Colonel Quintin D. Jones, commanding officer of 23d Marine Regiment in San Bruno.

Things to do in the San Fernando Valley, LA area, Nov. 3-10

Redondo Beach: The Veterans Day Tribute will take place at 1 p.m. Friday at the Veterans Memorial in Veterans Park, 309 Esplanade. The event will feature Sgt. Willie Frazier and The Air National Guard Band. The service will be followed by a barbecue picnic open to the public and sponsored by the Redondo Beach Elks, and is free for veterans, active military, police and firefighters; $5 for others.

San Pedro: The Veterans Day Celebration at the Battleship USS Iowa Museum, 250 S. Harbor Blvd, will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. There will be a ceremony, concert and more aboard the Iowa. For tickets and more information, visit bit.ly/3fv1K5n.

Santa Clarita: Santa Clarita invites community members to join the City Council for the Veterans Day Ceremony on at 11 a.m. Friday at Veterans Historical Plaza, 24275 N. Walnut St. The ceremony will include musical performances, speakers and more. Local veterans’ resources will provide information about their services.

Simi Valley: The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, 40 Presidential Drive, will host its annual Veterans Day Event at 11 a.m. Friday. The event will feature live musical entertainment, a civil war encampment, a military vehicle display and a program honoring each military branch. Reservations are recommended. South El Monte: The annual Veterans Day Ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. Friday on City Hall’s front lawn, 1415 Santa Anita Ave. Hot dogs will be served after the ceremony.

Torrance: The community is invited to join the Torrance Historical Society in honoring veterans. The “Visit with a Veteran” event will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, at the Torrance Historical Society and Museum, 1345 Post Ave.

Whittier: The annual Veterans Day Celebration, which is free to attend, will take place from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday at Central Park, 6532 Friends Ave. The Los Angeles County Sherrif’s Department band will perform.
