VOTE: Southern California Boys Athlete of the Week, January 20

Each week, publications from the Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select the Athletes of the Week for their respective region.

Each athlete is then entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Click on the newspaper links below the athlete’s name to read about their performance from last week, and then vote for who you think deserves the top honor.

Readers are allowed to vote multiple times. Voting ends at midnight, but final totals aren’t always immediately reflected due to processing.

Nate Garcia, Damien: The 6-foot-11 sophomore set a school record for most points in a game, dropping 48 points to go with 20 rebounds in an 83-60 victory over Chino Hills. Garcia broke a record that was set in 1972 when Don Bartell scored 47 points. Garcia also had 20 points in the Spartans’ 52-24 win over Los Osos to remain undefeated in the Baseline league. Damien has big games this week at Rancho Cucamonga (Wednesday) and at home against Etiwanda (Friday).

Marcus Adams Jr., Narbonne: Adams turned in another big week for the Gauchos. He scored 50 points, hit 10 3-pointers and grabbed 21 rebounds in an 84-68 win over San Pedro. He also had 33 points and 12 rebounds in a 53-45 win over Gardena.

Jared McCain, Centennial: McCain delivered a pair of big performances as the Huskies scored victories over Roosevelt and Camden (New Jersey) last week. The 6-foot-2 guard, who has signed with Duke, had 26 points and 12 rebounds in a Big VIII League win over Roosevelt. McCain scored 13 of those points in the final quarter to help the Huskies take sole possession of first place in the league standings. And in the showdown between nationally-ranked teams, McCain drained six 3-pointers and scored 27 points against Camden at the Spalding Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Mass.

Ryland Whitworth, Fountain Valley: He finished first in the 195-pound division of the Five Counties tournament at Fountain Valley High School. Earlier this season Whitworth finished second in the Zinkin Classic, seventh in the Doc Buchanan Invitational and first in the Mann Classic. Whitworth is ranked fifth in the state for his weight class by TheCaliforniaWrestler.com.

Jackson Cryst, Millikan: Cryst, a 6-foot-10 sophomore center, recorded a unique triple-double with 19 points, 17 rebounds and 20 blocks in Millikan’s 92-31 win against Compton on Jan. 9. Cryst, who also plays volleyball, is averaging a double-double this season with 12 points, 11 rebounds and 5 blocks per game.

Dylan Goosen, Northridge Academy: Goosen has been filling the box score this year, and he showed off his range in two wins last week when he made a combined 14 3-pointers and had 17 assists. He scored 29 points in a win over Fulton Prep and 31 points in a win over VAAS.
