VOTE: Southern California Boys Athlete of the Week, January 27

Each week, publications from the Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select the Athletes of the Week for their respective region.

Each athlete is then entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Click on the newspaper links below the athlete’s name to read about their performance from last week, and then vote for who you think deserves the top honor.

Readers are allowed to vote multiple times. Voting ends at midnight, but final totals aren’t always immediately reflected due to processing.

Julien Gomez, La Mirada: The sophomore came through in two big games for the Matadores. He had 30 points and seven rebounds in a 53-50 victory over Foothill, which had lost just one game. Against Downey, with first place in the Gateway League at stake, Gomez scored six of his game-high 29 points in overtime to lift the Matadores to a 63-56 victory. Gomez leads the area in scoring with an  average of 26 points a game.

Alex Morales, South Torrance: Morales helped lead the South wrestling team to the tournament title at the Jaguar Classic at Segerstrom High. Morales (113 pounds) dominated his weight class, winning three matches by fall to reach the final. In the final, he won by technical fall. As a team, South recorded 210.5 points.

Sidney Dina, JSerra: His overall outstanding play included a goal scored in the Lions’ 4-1 win over Mater Dei in a Trinity League game. That placed JSerra into a tie with Mater Dei for first place with both teams at 4-1-1 in league. The previous week Dina, a midfielder, had a goal and an assist in JSerra’s 4-0 win over Servite. JSerra rose to No. 1 this week in the CIF Southern Section Divisions 1 and 2 combined rankings. “He’s been the nucleus of all of this,” said JSerra coach Erick Kirsch. “He does it all.”

Keishmer Foster, Aquinas: Foster, a 6-foot-3 point guard, came through with clutch performances to help the Falcons score a pair of big victories last week. Foster scored a team-high 22 points as Aquinas beat Ontario Christian 65-55 to take sole possession of first place in the Ambassador League standings. He closed the week by scoring 30 points in a 60-53 victory over San Diego Madison at the Linfield Christian showcase event. Aquinas has won six consecutive games and is 17-7 on the season.

Isaac Sowell, Dominguez: Sowell, a 6-foot-5 point forward, finished with a game-high 23 points and 21 rebounds in Dominguez’s 59-58 comeback win at home against Downey on Friday, Jan. 20. The Dons trailed at halftime but Sowell led his team to victory on the night the school retired the high school jerseys of former NBA players Tyson Chandler and Tayshaun Prince.

Trent Perry, Harvard-Westlake: Perry was instrumental in the Wolverines’ biggest week of the regular season, helping to beat Notre Dame 85-78 in double overtime before topping Sierra Canyon at home 72-52. The junior point guard scored a game-high 27 points, which included making 15 of 16 free throws, against Notre Dame and added 15 points in the win over Sierra Canyon. Harvard-Westlake is 23-1 overall and in first place in the Mission League at 5-0.
