VOTE: Southern California Boys Athlete of the Week, January 6

Each week, publications from the Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select the Athletes of the Week for their respective region.

Each athlete is then entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Click on the newspaper links below the athlete’s name to read about their performance from last week, and then vote for who you think deserves the top honor.

Readers are allowed to vote multiple times. Voting ends at midnight, but final totals aren’t always immediately reflected due to processing.


The overall winner will be announced on Friday, January 6.

Alex Hassanein, Palos Verdes: Hassanein scored 16 points in the Sea Kings’ 63-59 win over Liberty in the championship game of the Raising Canes Division in the Desert Mirage Classic. The junior guard was selected MVP of the division after he averaged 18 points per game.

Ezequiel Soto, San Gorgonio: The senior midfielder tallied five goals and seven assists over five matches to help San Gorgonio win the title at its annual tournament. Soto scored the decisive goal in the 16th minute of overtime to lift the Spartans to a 2-1 victory over Adelanto in the championship match. He also provided the assist on Alex Ramirez’s goal during the second half. Soto, who was chosen the MVP of the tournament, scored in four of five matches and had at least one assist in each match.

Zack Davidson, Mater Dei: Davidson was named Most Valuable Player of the In-N-Out Burger Division in the Desert Holiday Classic in the Palm Springs area. He led the Monarchs to the division championship as he averaged 24 points and 10 rebounds over four games. The 6-foot-8 forward had 36 points and 10 rebounds in a victory over Mira Costa. He signed with the University of Montana.

Isaiah Johnson, Campbell Hall: Johnson averaged 15 points as Campbell Hall won the Silver Division title in The Classic at Damien. Johnson had 13 points and nine assists in the championship game and was named tournament MVP. Campbell Hall defeated La Mirada 70-69 in the final with a last-second shot.

Sean Oliver, Wilson: The senior made the all-tournament team in the Tustin Holiday Classic after leading Wilson to the consolation championship. Oliver, a 6-foot-6 guard/forward, averaged 24 points, seven rebounds and four assists per game during tournament play.
