VOTE: Southern California Girls Athlete of the Week, January 20

Each week, publications from the Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select the Athletes of the Week for their respective region.

Each athlete is then entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Click on the newspaper links below the athlete’s name to read about their performance from last week, and then vote for who you think deserves the top honor.

Readers are allowed to vote multiple times. Voting ends at midnight, but final totals aren’t always immediately reflected due to processing.


The overall winner will be announced on Friday, January 20.

Ella Zimmerman, Redondo: Zimmerman scored 26 points and added eight rebounds and two blocks in a 47-41 win over Santa Monica. She had another 20-point night as the Sea Hawks defeated Peninsula 62-58.

Mimi Dominguez, Bishop Amat: The Lancers’ star striker leads the CIF Southern Section in goals with 30. She added to her total with a goal in the final 30 seconds that gave her team a 2-1 victory over La Salle. Bishop Amat, ranked No. 1 in CIF-SS Division 3, improved to 15-3-1 overall and 2-0 in the Del Rey League. Dominguez has scored four goals or more in a game three times this season, and has scored in 15 of her team’s 19 games.

Sienna McAthy, Huntington Beach: McAthy scored all three of the Oilers’ goals to help lead the team to victories against Edison and Los Alamitos in the Surf League. She scored in overtime in a 1-0 win against Edison and twice in the first half in a 2-1 triumph against Los Alamitos. McAthy has 14 goals for Huntington Beach (16-2-1).

Dejah Saldivar, Ontario Christian: Saldivar scored 51 points and knocked down 17 shots from 3-point range during last week’s Ambassador League victory over Linfield Christian. The 5-foot-5 guard set a state record for most 3-pointers made in a game, breaking the previous record of 16 held by three players, according to Saldivar’s 51 points ranks second in school history, only two points shy of the record held by Jeannette Tjaarda (1977). Saldivar is averaging 15 points per game this season and has made 99 of 241 attempts (41.1 %) from behind the arc this season.

Andrea Perkins, Long Beach Poly: Perkins, a 5-foot-8 guard, led her team with 16 points in a 62-51 win at Lakewood, which kept the Jackrabbits undefeated in Moore League play. Perkins is averaging 11.1 points, 1.8 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game.

Taylor Swanson, Westlake: Swanson led the Warriors in rebounding and assists in all three of their wins last week, including Marmonte League wins over Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park. She averaged 14 points per game in those victories while shooting 52% from the field and 83% from the free throw line. Westlake was 16-4 overall with a nine-game winning streak as it headed into Tuesday night’s league showdown with Oaks Christian.
