Each week, publications from the Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select the Athletes of the Week for their respective region.
Each athlete is then entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Readers are allowed to vote multiple times. Voting ends at Friday at noon, but final totals aren’t always immediately reflected due to processing.

Kathryn Simpson, Charter Oak: Simpson was the San Gabriel Valley’s only girls individual double winner at the CIF Southern Section Division 4 Swimming Championships. Simpson won the 200 freestyle in 1 minute, 53.65 seconds, a time that qualified her for this week’s state meet. She also won the 100 free in 52.66 to earn girls athlete of the week honors.
Teagan O’Dell, Santa Margarita: O’Dell lowered her own Orange County and Division 1 records in the 100-yard backstroke by winning in 51.45 seconds at the CIF-SS Championships to help lead the Eagles to the title. She won the 200 individual medley in 1:54.75 after setting the Division 1 record in prelims with a 1:54.07, five one-hundredths of a second off the national age-group mark in the 15-16 division.
Kaylin Edwards, Wilson: The sophomore hurdler ran the 100 hurdles in a time of 14.20 seconds at the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 Track and Field Prelims. After running a personal record time, Edwards will enter the Division 1 Finals as the No. 1 seed. Edwards will be the No. 2 seed in the 300 hurdles after running 43.68 at prelims. She is also part of Wilson’s 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams, which are both No. 1 seeds for the CIF-SS Finals Saturday at Moorpark High School.
Miali Guachino, Great Oak: Guachino starred in the circle and at the plate during Great Oak’s 5-0 win over Arcadia in a CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoff opener. She tossed a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts and also was 4 for 4 with a pair of home runs and four RBIs. Guachino, who has committed to Ole Miss, has been one of the most dominant pitchers in the nation. She is 12-4 with a 0.68 ERA and has fanned 210 batters in 103 1/3 innings. She has hit four homers and knocked in 15 runs over the past eight games.
Lily Dormans, Hart: Dormans was exceptional at the CIF Southern Section swimming championships. In Division 1, she won the girls 500-yard freestyle in 4 minutes, 50.08 seconds. Dormans was close to being a four-time CIF champion as she finished second in three other events – 200 freestyle (1:48.97), 200 medley relay (1:43.96), and 400 freestyle relay (3:27.29). She is committed to swim at USC.
Brazil Neal, Serra: Neal finished first in the 100 meters (11.75 seconds) and fourth in the 200 (24.93 seconds) at the CIF-SS track and field Division 4 prelims. She qualified for the CIF-SS Championships at Moorpark High on Saturday. She also helped lead the Serra 4×100 relay team to a first-place time of 46.93.
