VOTE: Southern California Girls Athlete of the Week, November 4

Each week, publications from the Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select the Athletes of the Week for their respective region.

Each athlete is then entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Click on the newspaper links below the athlete’s name to read about their performance from last week, and then vote for who you think deserves the top honor.

Readers are allowed to vote multiple times. Voting ends at midnight, but final totals aren’t always immediately reflected due to processing.

Kenzie Nguyen, Portola: Nguyen captured the Pacific Coast League singles title with an 8-4 victory against senior teammate Prisha Rapur. Nguyen also helped lead the Bulldogs to a share of their first league title.

Erica Lee, Arcadia: The Apaches won the CIF Southern Section Division 1 title with senior Erica Lee leading the way with a 4-under 68 at the Huntington Club in Huntington Beach on Monday. Lee will be attending the University of Illinois on a full scholarship. Zoe Sprecher shot a 72 and Jessie Kong and Madeline Lee each shot 75 as the top four finishers for the Apaches. They shot a 9-over 369 as a team.

Drew Wright, Mira Costa: Wright recorded 22 kills in a three-set win over Palos Verdes and added 25 kills in the Mustangs’ five-set win over Mater Dei. She added 11 digs against Mater Dei. Mira Costa will face Sierra Canyon on Saturday in the CIF-SS Division 1 final.

London Wijay, Alemany: The Texas A&M commit led the Warriors in their quarterfinal and semifinal wins over South Pasadena and Edison, respectively, last week en route to the CIF Southern Section Division 3 title game Saturday. Wijay had 16 kills and 10 digs in a sweep of South Pasadena before notching 23 kills and 20 digs with five aces in a four-set win over Edison. In the final, Alemany will take on Oaks Christian in a rematch of last year’s Division 3 final, which the Warriors won in five sets.

Taylor Wilson, Arrowhead Christian Academy: Wilson, a 5-foot-9 outside hitter, registered 31 kills over two matches as the Eagles knocked off a a pair of seeded teams and advanced to a CIF Southern Section championship match for the first time in 16 years. Wilson tallied 19 kills over four sets to help beat No. 3-seeded Riverside Poly in a Division 6 quarterfinal match, and she followed that up with 10 kills, three aces and two blocks in the Eagles’ sweep of No. 2 seed Rancho Christian in the semifinals.

Samarah DaCoud, Lakewood:  DaCoud had 26 kills and 14 digs in Lakewood’s 3-2 win at home against Palos Verdes in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 girls volleyball playoffs on Saturday, Oct. 29. The senior outside hitter is committed to the University of New Mexico. Lakewood will learn Sunday who it will play next week in the CIF State playoffs.
