VOTE: Southern California Girls Athlete of the Week, October 14

Each week, publications from the Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select the Athletes of the Week for their respective region.

Each athlete is then entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Click on the newspaper links below the athlete’s name to read about their performance from last week, and then vote for who you think deserves the top honor.

Readers are allowed to vote multiple times. Voting ends at midnight, but final totals aren’t always immediately reflected due to processing.

Hailey Heflin, Glendora: Heflin led the way with 12 kills and three blocks in the Tartans’ sweep, 25-21, 25-15,  27-25, of Bonita to grab sole possession of first place in the Palomares League. Bonita had been the last team to beat Glendora (23-4). The Tartans have won five straight, all in straight sets.

Ryan Bullock, Santa Margarita: The Eagles’ team captain won her second tournament of the season by shooting a 1-under-par 70 at the Ayala Fall Classic at Western Hills Country Club. Bullock also earned medalist honors in a victory against Rosary with a 1-under 35 at Tijeras Creek Golf Club. Earlier this season, she won the Rainbow Sandals invitational in San Clemente.

Charlie Fuerbringer, Mira Costa: The Mustangs had a busy week, winning eight matches, including the championship match of the Molten Power Classic. Fuerbringer led the way, winning the tournament’s MVP honors. Along with her setting duties, Fuerbringer also contributed 12 kills and 37 digs last week.

Morgan Graves, Don Lugo: Graves tallied 53 kills and 34 digs over seven sets as the Conquistadores won a pair of matches to clinch the program’s third consecutive Mt. Baldy League championship. Graves, a 5-foot-10 outside hitter, registered 23 kills and 21 digs as Don Lugo swept Baldwin Park in the first match of the week. She followed with 30 kills and 13 digs as the Conquistadores beat Chaffey in four sets. For the week, Graves had a .494 attacking percentage. She is averaging 5.2 kills and 4.6 digs per set this season.

Jade Epps, Lakewood: Epps led Lakewood to a 3-0 win against Millikan on Thursday, Oct. 6. The junior outside hitter had a team-high 12 kills to power the Lancers to victory. Lakewood clinched back-to-back Moore League titles with the win. They will finish league play this week against Wilson and Compton and will look to go 12-0 in the Moore League for the second straight season.

Nicole Zake, Oaks Christian: Zake, an outside hitter, led the Lions last week, averaging 11.5 kills per match in two sweeping victories over wins Agoura and Calabasas. Oaks Christian has not dropped a set in Marmonte League play all season.
