NBA champion and Los Angeles basketball legend Michael Cooper has been named the new head coach of Cal State LA’s men’s basketball team, a move university leaders say reflects both his winning pedigree and deep ties to the city. Introduced April 8 at the University Gym, Cooper—who won five NBA titles with the Lakers and three championships as a coach—steps into the role after serving as associate head coach during the Golden Eagles’ historic 2023–24 conference championship season. A Los Angeles native with decades of experience across the NBA, WNBA and collegiate ranks, Cooper said he aims to build a program that reflects the university’s diverse and ambitious student-athletes while strengthening community connections and support. University officials and former teammates, including members of the “Showtime” Lakers, praised Cooper’s leadership and influence, expressing confidence that his presence will elevate the program both on and off the court.
