Comedian Jay Leno undergoes surgery for burns after garage fire

A few days after being burned due to a fire at his vintage car garage in Burbank, comedian Jay Leno is on the road to recovery according to doctors.

Dr. Peter Grossman of the Grossman Burn Center in West Hills said Leno has undergone one surgery so far to treat burns he suffered in a fire at his Burbank vintage-car garage, and he will undergo another procedure later this week.

TMZ reported that one of Leno’s vintage cars erupted in flames for unknown reasons Sunday, Nov. 13. According to the website, Leno suffered burns on the left side of his face, but his eyes and ears were not damaged.

In a statement to Variety Monday, Leno said, “I got some serious burns from a gasoline fire. I am OK. Just need a week or two to get back on my feet.”

Grossman said Leno is doing well and in “good spirits,” calling him a “kind and engaging” patient who this morning was passing out cookies to children being treated at the hospital.

The former “Tonight Show” host suffered “deep second-degree” and possibly some third-degree burns to his face, hands and chest, he said. But Grossman said he anticipates Leno will make a “full recovery.”
