Disneyland announces opening date for revamped Toontown

One day shy of a year after it closed, a reimagined Toontown will reopen at Disneyland on March 8, Disney officials announced today, Nov. 18.

The centerpiece will be the trackless Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, which opens ahead of the land on Jan. 27 and places guests in the middle of a frenetic Mickey Mouse cartoon.

The whimsical land with no straight lines on structures that was inspired by the 1988 live-action/animated comedy mystery film “Who Framed Roger Rabbit,” will now feature a grassy play area for young children.

The Centoonial Park fountain interactive water play area near the Toontown entrance will regularly spring to life. Water will spurt from clamshells, flower blossoms and the mouths of cartoon fish in the fountain basin. Mickey will hold Minnie aloft in a ballerina pose at the top of the fountain.

Cafe Daisy will take over space once dedicated to the land’s food stands — Pluto’s Dog House, Daisy’s Diner and Clarabelle’s ice cream. The Daisy Duck-themed sidewalk eatery will serve “dinner classics.”

Next door, the Good Boy Grocers Market themed to Mickey’s dog Pluto will sell grab-and-go drinks and snacks. The City Hall roof will feature white-gloved cartoon hands that bang bells with mallets, pull air whistles and fire cannonballs from cannons. A golden piggy bank hops over the bank’s roof.

Goofy’s House and Donald Duck’s Boat will be rethemed as children’s play areas.
