Ryan Staub, Dane Dunn, Chase Martin highlights 2022 league MVP football selections

The Mission, Foothill, Golden, Pacific, Angelus, Marmonte, and Canyon Leagues released its all-league football selections and year awards for the 2022 season this past week.

Sierra Canyon sophomore running back Dane Dunn was named the co-MVP (with Gardena Serra’s Rodrick Pleasant) of the Mission League. The hard-running tailback anchored the Trailblazers to a league title in the program’s first season in the league.

Dunn has accumulated 1,815 yards and 23 touchdowns this season.

Sierra Canyon’s Xavier White and Chaminade’s Marquis Gallegos were named co-Defensive Player of the Year. Sierra Canyon’s Eugene Brooks and Serra’s Jagger Tavai were named co-Lineman of the Year. Bishop Amat’s Delano Franklin was named Offensive Player of the Year.

West Ranch quarterback Ryan Staub was named Player of the Year in the Foothill League after leading the Wildcats to their first league title in program history. West Ranch’s Maverick Diaz was named Offensive Player of the Year, teammate Brady Van Bennekum was named co-Defensive Player of the Year with Golden Valley’s Malachi Beacham, and Saugus’ Deohn Turner was named Lineman of the Year.

Staub finished the season passing for more than 3,000 yards and 37 touchdowns with just five interceptions.

In the Marmonte League, St. Bonaventure running back Delon Thompson won Player of the Year for a second straight time. Oaks Christian’s Luke Baklenko is the Offensive Lineman of the Year and teammate Justice Williams was co-Wide Receiver of the Year. Calabasas’ Aaron Butler was named Defensive Back of the Year. Simi Valley’s Caleb Alvary was named Offensive Back of the Year.

Thousand Oaks senior Chase Martin ran away with the Canyon League MVP after leading the Lancers to a perfect 10-0 regular season and league title playing running back and linebacker. Teammate Will Halub was named Defensive Back of the Year and Dane Wilson was named Offensive Lineman of the Year.

Newbury Park freshman quarterback Brady Smigiel was named Offensive Back of the Year and teammates Shane Rosenthal was named co-Receiver of the Year as a sophomore.

Daily News Girls Athlete of the Week: Madison McDonald, Harvard-Westlake

Smigiel finished the season with 3,479 yards passing with 46 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Highland linebacker Adonte Medley was named Golden League MVP for anchoring the Bulldogs to a 7-0 campaign in league play. Teammates Aydehn Kingsberry was named Defensive Player of the Year; running back Brandon Johnson was named Back of the Year; and Moredecai Hines was named Lineman of the Year.

St. Francis quarterback Jack Jacobs was named Angelus League MVP after throwing more than 30 touchdowns this season. Teammate Racin Delgatty was named co-Lineman of the Year.

Indiana Wijay, former Chaminade quarterback, who’s now a senior at Pasadena High, was named Pacific League MVP.
