VOTE: Southern California Boys Athlete of the Week, November 25

Each week, publications from the Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select the Athletes of the Week for their respective region.

Each athlete is then entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Click on the newspaper links below the athlete’s name to read about their performance from last week, and then vote for who you think deserves the top honor.

Readers are allowed to vote multiple times. Voting ends at midnight, but final totals aren’t always immediately reflected due to processing.

Maddox Bernardino, Diamond Bar: The Brahmas senior scored the go-ahead touchdown with 24 seconds left in a 21-14 win over San Dimas in the CIF Southern Section Division 9 semifinals. He scored the TD on a 34-yard pass from Ryan Lewis. He then secured the win with an interception in the final seconds. Bernardino finished the game with eight catches for 122 yards. Diamond Bar will host Laguna Beach in the Division 9 final Saturday at 7 p.m.

Juan Chantaca, San Clemente: He was the fastest of all Orange County boys at the CIF Southern Section Cross Country Championships. His time of 14 minutes, 59.8 seconds over the 3-mile course at Mt. San Antonio College was good enough for second place in the Division 1 race as San Clemente won the team championship. The Tritons are No. 1 in the state rankings for Division I going into the CIF State Championships on Saturday at Fresno. Chantaca this season finished first in the Orange County Championships and second in the Mt. SAC Invitational.

Bryant Carey, Downey: Carey had four catches for 131 yards receiving and two total touchdowns (1 receiving, 1 on special teams) in Downey’s 55-54 comeback win against Cathedral in the CIF Southern Section Division 4 semifinals on Friday, Nov. 18. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound athlete also had eight tackles and an 85-yard kick return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, which fueled Downey’s 12-point comeback late in the game. Carey, a three-star recruit, has a school-record 19 receiving touchdowns in 13 games this season.

Jamari Johnson, Inglewood: Johnson had four touchdowns in the Sentinels’ CIF-SS Division 2 semifinal win over Chaminade. The senior had two receiving touchdowns and two rushing TDs, including the game-winning score on a 1-yard run in overtime.

Trevin Adams, CSDR: Adams rushed for 204 yards and six touchdowns, passed for 214 yards and two touchdowns and also returned a pair of interceptions for touchdowns as the Cubs routed Faith Baptist 80-26 to win the CIF Southern Section’s Division 1 8-man title. The eight touchdowns scored by Adams is tied for the second most in Inland history. He also ran in six two-point conversions to finish with 60 points scored, which ties the Inland record for a single game and is tied for the second most in state history.

Jazz Gardner, West Ranch: Gardner, a 7-footer, scored 20 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and had four blocked shots in the Wildcats’ 66-64 win over Notre Dame in the Paul Sutton Tournament final at Providence High in Burbank on Saturday, Nov. 19. Gardner was named tournament MVP.
