VOTE: Southern California Girls Athlete of the Week, November 25

Each week, publications from the Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select the Athletes of the Week for their respective region.

Each athlete is then entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Click on the newspaper links below the athlete’s name to read about their performance from last week, and then vote for who you think deserves the top honor.

Readers are allowed to vote multiple times. Voting ends at midnight, but final totals aren’t always immediately reflected due to processing.

Angela Liu, Santa Margarita: The UCLA commit led the Eagles to their first CIF State team championship by capturing the individual state title with a 5-under-par 67 at San Gabriel Country Club in San Gabriel.

Maya DeBrouwer, La Cañada: The sophomore had an excellent day at the CIF Southern Section Cross Country Finals at Mt. SAC. She finished second in the Division 4 final with a time of 17 minutes, 9.8 seconds, as Payton Godsey of Oaks Christian won in 16:54.2. Those were two fastest times in all of the girls divisions. The Spartans finished third in the Division 4 team standings, to advance, along with DeBrouwer, to the CIF State Meet on Saturday in Fresno.

Jadyn Lee, Peninsula: Lee began the season with a week of strong performances. The senior averaged 22.2 points and 9.8 rebounds in five games as the Panthers went 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the St. Mary’s Tip-Off Classic.

Alexa Bryson, Long Beach Poly: Bryson passed 40 runners and moved up from 100th place to 60th place during the final 2 miles of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 Cross Country Finals at Mt. SAC on Saturday, Nov. 19, to help Long Beach Poly finish fifth overall and qualify for the CIF State Championships meet by a mere 13 points (places). Bryson finished as Poly’s third runner in a time of 19 minutes and 53 seconds on the extremely hilly 2.93-mile course. Poly will compete in the CIF State Championships on Saturday, Nov. 26 in Fresno.

Ari Long, Valley View: Long, a 6-foot guard who signed with Washington earlier this month, averaged 37.2 points, 14.4 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 4.2 steals over five games as the Eagles captured the title at the Raincross Tournament in Riverside. Long scored 45 points in the season opener against Chaparral and capped the tournament by scoring 44 points and grabbing 18 rebounds to lead Valley View to a 79-75 victory over Rancho Christian in the championship game. She scored 31, 27 and 39 points in the other games. Long registered a double-double in each of the five games.

Tate Drageset, Buckley: Drageset had 23 kills, 10 digs and three aces for the Griffins in their first-ever appearance in the CIF State finals. Buckley lost in four sets to Archie Williams of San Anselmo, 25-15, 21-25, 23-25, 23-25, in the Division III final.
