Eddie Murphy was honored with the 51st AFI Life Achievement Award on April 18 during a star-studded gala at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, recognizing his decades-long impact on film and comedy. The tribute, celebrating Murphy’s groundbreaking career, will premiere as a special on Netflix on May 31, 2026.
The evening brought together an array of industry figures and longtime collaborators, with tributes highlighting Murphy’s influence on generations of performers and audiences alike. Among those in attendance were Byron Allen, Colman Domingo, Nia Long, and Keegan-Michael Key, while a lineup of comedians and entertainers—including Dave Chappelle, Kevin Hart, Martin Lawrence, Chris Rock, and Tracy Morgan—paid homage through speeches and reflections. The celebration also featured a musical performance by Jennifer Hudson, backed by a live band led by Rickey Minor.
Director Spike Lee, who presented the award, underscored Murphy’s cultural impact, noting that while their paths differed, both have contributed to shaping the national conversation. “Eddie made us laugh and made our nation feel better,” Lee said, adding that Murphy continues to push culture forward.
Murphy received a standing ovation as he accepted the honor, reflecting on the significance of the moment. “Looking out and seeing all my family, all my kids and my beautiful wife… this is a special moment,” he said. “I’d like to thank everybody for this night that I will remember forever and ever.”
